My Story

by Kek the New Zealand Falcon

Where did JAK-73

I’ve had heaps of fun flying in JAK-73. Now I have fame! I’ll tell you how it happened.
My writer had everything lined up ready to print JAK-73 chasing freedom. She had aimed for the start of the school year perfectly. The proof reading was done. A date was set with her Printer.
Her Artist, Sarah, had the sketches for the cover all done and ready to send when … knock me down with a feather … her car was stolen!
Sarah did eventually get her car back, but it was empty. Her sketches for Jean and the art materials she used to do the sketches were gone! By the time the car was found, panic had
struck anyway. Meantime, in jumps a young reader who suggested using AI to draw my head. She tried and did some amazing work in just a couple of hours. But AI did not get the message and there
wasn’t enough time to practice. The message? That’s about the markings on my face having to be absolutely right. They’re important! They tell the world I’m a female NZ Falcon!
Panic struck again! Next day was printing day! It was booked!
“I’ve got this photo of your look-alike, Kek,” says Jean. “And I love it to bits!” She rang Pete McGregor, the man who had taken the photograph, and Pete said it was okay to use his photo of me.
That’s how I got the job!
You can see me here, on the front cover of JAK-73 chasing
freedom! I love it!
